Google to Index Tweets…Again!

Back in 2009, Google started to index tweets that were sent on Twitter so that they would be incorporated into real-time Search. However, in 2011 the tweet indexing contract between Google and Twitter expired and the indexed tweets on Google Search disappeared.

Fast forward four years: many news outlets, including Bloomberg, are reporting that Twitter and Google have come to an agreement that will once again give the Google access to Twitter’s content in the first half of 2015. Google will now have access to Twitter’s API (its firehose) and won’t have to crawl the micro-blogging site for content.

The pending agreement will be mutually beneficial for both companies: Twitter will expand its reach at a time when the company is experiencing slow audience growth and Google will be able to share even more information in its real-time search queries. From hashtags to entire tweets, Google will now show searchers topics trending on the micro-blogging site.

How this agreement will help local businesses

It is too soon to tell how this will impact your local business’s SEO or content reach, but experts and insiders agree it will be positive for the following reasons:

  • Your tweets will now be displayed on Google in real-time, expanding the audience that sees them to beyond just your Twitter followers
  • With every public status being readily available, your SEO-optimized tweets are more likely to appear in top search results through Google
  • Tweets appearing in Google Search will not only bring more people to your content, but bring them to your Twitter profile where they can follow you and readily access your tweets in the future

How do you think indexing tweets will impact your local business’s Twitter strategy?
